I remember when I first moved to Los Angeles – downtown was sketch and disappointing to say the least. There are definitely places that could still use help, but there has been quite an improvement over the years. In fact, in the words of my roommate – it feels like there is intentional design behind much of it.
My desire was to originally scout Union Station, but I got distracted by all the fun stuff on Grand Ave. from the Central Library to the Music Center. There are definitely some great places to paint in that area which I hope to get to next, but of course the Walt Disney Concert Hall stood out the most. The building alone is enough reason to get out your paints – it is architectural artistry at it’s finest (and so shiny). It’s surrounding grounds are actually a public park and designed beautifully. The contrast of the organic and the metallic make you feel like you are in a futuristic sci-fi story. All of this and the abundant pink blooms are what ultimately inspired the painting. If you find yourself in that area, I encourage you to go visit – especially if you’re down there for jury duty, it will make for quite a respite.
